"the prince of the world cometh"
« on: July 22, 2012, 01:35:45 PM »
What exactly is Jesus referring to here in John 14:30? "I will no more speak much with you, for the prince of the world cometh: and he hath nothing in me".

I'm trying to figure out the time frame? [Satan] has always been on the earth, so he never left. He has always persecuted Jehovah's Old Testament servants as well as New Testaments saints.

Was Jesus referring to his coming execution or something else?

I believe you meant to say, Satan has always been on the earth’, that is he has been contained in chains of darkness here in the earth atmosphere along with the rest of the fallen angels ever since the flood.

What our Lord implied was that he was about to leave them (physically) dying on the cross, and that the “Prince of this World” was coming to set up his counterfeit kingdom of Christ, the Papal Empire. This of course would not be fully realized until 800 A.D., for the time being there would yet remain one who restrains or interposes that being the Roman Empire (2 Thess 2:7)

I think Zephyr is correct - that our Lord was referring to his capture and execution.  When you consider that this was just a few hours before Jesus was taken by the Sanhedrin, it fits.  It might help to look at other translations also.  Here is JB Phillips translation, which helps the translation in this case I think.

27-31 “I leave behind with you—peace; I give you my own peace and my gift is nothing like the peace of this world. You must not be distressed and you must not be daunted. You have heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you really loved me, you would be glad because I am going to my Father, for my Father is greater than I. And I have told you of it now, before it happens, so that when it does happen, your faith in me will not be shaken. I shall not be able to talk much longer to you for the spirit that rules this world is coming very close. He has no hold over me, but I go on my way to show the world that I love the Father and do what he sent me to do ... Get up now! Let us leave this place.

I understand that Brother Bruce, now re-read what he originally stated once more viz.,

‘I'm trying to figure out the time frame? Jesus has always been on the earth, so he never left. He has always persecuted Jehovah's Old Testament servants as well as New Testaments saints.’

If you believe the foregoing was true of our Lord then we have a problem.

It’s possible we’ve both wrong, note once again the question asked,

‘Was Jesus referring to his coming execution or something else?’

That is was Jesus referring to his (i.e. his own) coming execution or was Jesus referring to Satan’s coming execution?

I think we have to let Zephyr clarify, because in his post it seems to me he was referring to Satan, not Jesus.

Our Lord, I believe, was speaking to the disciples about his own death.  I think this conclusion fits the context of the discussion he had with the disciples.

Jesus was trying to prepare the disciples because he knew that they did not yet understand that he had to die.  The adversary's influence no doubt played a part in Jesus' betrayal (John 13:27), but Satan could not destroy Jesus as long as our Lord was faithful to the Heavenly Father's will - which he always was.

I edited Z's comment, as it was obvious he meant satan and not Jesus, for some reason my "editing" didn't show up.
The Harvest Message is the divinely appointed and established standard, appointed and established by God Himself, through the agencies and instrumentalities of His own choosing. It is the church's standard. We are to adjust and correct ourselves by it, and not presume to correct the standard.
